Friendly Faux, Gelatinus Cube and Dune to play free show at Casa Nueva on Thursday
Columbus bands Friendly Faux and Gelatinus Cube will be heading down to Athens to play with band DUNE for a free show on Thursday.
The show will be at Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St., and start at 10 p.m. with the order of the bands not set yet.
Gelatinus Cube, a psychedelic rock band, has seen its fair share of members coming and going since its formation. The band’s Facebook currently lists 7 members, with instruments ranging from keyboard to clarinet — but that list is always changing.
“There’s been a lot of changes and additions but most of the time when one person steps out we take a little break and we come back in with someone else,” Pat Chase, Gelatinus Cube’s vocalist, guitarist, pianist and trombone player, said. “It’s always a revolving door.”
Gelatinus Cube’s unique sound is a result of their extensive recording process, which relies on individual members making their own contributions to each song.
“Everyone kind of works together in groups,” Chase said. “Basically one person gets the core of the song down and then everyone else throws in their own parts, so it’s a very fluid process. It might take a while sometimes but we always try to get the most unique sound by doing everyone’s individual input.”
Friendly Faux, a three-piece garage rock band from Columbus, Ohio, blends heavy guitar riffs with mysterious and sometimes cold lyrics.
“I like to write poetry that’s sincerely sarcastic and idiomatic.” Geoff Spall, Friendly Faux’s vocalist and guitar player, said. “I like phrasings and alliterations and things that I draw from media and common nomenclature, things that people say. I like to turn those on themselves”
While the band’s latest release Three Lefts was recorded digitally, its first self-titled album was recorded live and in an analog studio, therefore taking much longer to complete than a digital recording, but also resulting in an honest and transparent production.
“The mistakes are out there for people to hear, and the really good parts stand out that much more as a result,” Spall said, regarding the live recording of the band. “It was very raw and very basic, I really enjoyed it and I had a great time doing it.”
Both bands have their discographies for sale on bandcamp with the “Name Your Price” option.
“I think it’s the best way to get it out there,” Chase said, regarding releasing the albums for free. “The people who like to listen to your music don’t have to pay anything for it, and they’re going to be more likely to know the songs at your shows.”
Along with the two Columbus-based bands, DUNE will bring Athens to the stage with Josh Brown on bass, Louis Knight with vocals and guitar, Matt Toledo on guitar and Alex Neff on drums. The band released Roja in 2012 and is available on their bandcamp site for $10.
