In the midst of political unrest, Ohio University Student Senate will continue its work as a functioning body, revisiting last week’s tabled resolutions and voting on two new resolutions to staff the Accountability and Student Worker committees.
The resolution to change the formatting of senate’s resolutions, which was tabled last week, will be brought before the body with minor changes to make senate’s resolutions easier to understand and less formal. Among the format changes is the omission of the “resolved” and “whereas” clauses.
A resolution to open the sponsoring of resolutions to students will also appear before the body a second time.
Referencing this resolution, Senate Vice President Caitlyn McDaniel expressed her enthusiasm about senate’s movement toward greater student involvement after last week’s senate meeting.
“We want to open the democracy to all students,” she said. “We want to make senate no longer about senate, but about this body becoming a platform for students. Through the resolutions we are passing and continue to discuss, we are solidifying this idea.”
This revised resolution to open the sponsoring of resolutions to students is substantially longer than the original, due to added specifics to keep students from bringing resolutions to the body that could be interpreted as “hate speech,” and the formation of a new position on the Rules and Procedures Committee: Resolution Liaison.
The liaison will be charged with assisting students in the submission of resolutions, selecting resolutions to be reviewed by the Rules and Procedures Committee and reporting to the body which resolutions were restricted and for what reasons.
If passed, the resolution to staff the Administrative Accountability Committee will appoint Will Klatt as committee chair.
The resolution to staff the Student Worker Committee proposes the appointment of Jacob Haskins as chair, and the inclusion of the committee in the University Life Commission.
Becky Sebo, president of Bobcats for Israel who was arrested at last week’s senate meeting while speaking out against Senate President Megan Marzec dumping a bucket of fake blood over her head to protest Israel’s actions against Palestinians, would not tell The Post whether her group plans on attending this week’s meeting. Sebo was one of four students arrested for disrupting the meeting.
“We are not releasing any statements at this time,” Sebo said.
