More than 89 Ohio University issued purchasing cards will be cancelled after being potentially compromised

More than 89 Ohio University issued purchasing cards will be cancelled after being potentially compromised.

Dozens of Ohio University-issued purchasing cards will be cancelled after some were potentially compromised.

“Ohio University was recently made aware that 89 cards may have been exposed at certain compromised retailers, although we do not know specifically which retailers are currently in question as JPMorgan Chase does not provide that information,” Stephanie Filson, director of external communication, said in a statement. “In cases like this, the bank’s fraud unit closes all potentially affected cards and reissues new ones. Ohio University was not specifically targeted. Rather, some cards were used to purchase items at potentially compromised retailers and will be reissued as a matter of caution.”

Two types of cards were affected: purchasing cards and controlled value cards.

Purchasing cards allow the cardholder, who must be a university employee, “to charge work-related expenses directly to the appropriate university account,” according to OU’s website. Controlled value cards have “an expiration date and a life-of-the-card total overall dollar limit,” that is selected by the cardholder, according to the website.

No information was released about which specific cards were compromised, when they were comprised and if OU has lost any money from fraud.

However, at Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting, Katie Gunderson, senate’s graduate assistant who makes purchases for the organization, told senate her card was among those affected and she wouldn’t be able to make any purchases with senate’s controlled value card until she has been issued a new card.
