Men's Golf: Alumni convene for Bobcat Open; White earns MAC honor

The Bobcats will head north on U.S. 33 to Westerville on Monday to play at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in The Bobcat Open — an exhibition event consisting of members of the team and alumni.

After finishing ninth out of 14 teams at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Ohio coach Bob Cooley hopes the exhibition could work out some kinks in the team’s performance, but the events main purpose is to raise money for the team through loosened-style scramble format.

The event will consist of Ohio’s roster paired with various alumni, as well as other contributors, in an attempt to help raise money for the team and to have a relaxed day on the course, according to Cooley.

“[Alumni] enjoy watching our kids hit the golf ball, and they have fun because they get to play a great golf course. [The Lakes] will be in perfect condition and there will be great weather. It’s just a fun day,” Cooley said.

The Lakes is one of two sites that hosts a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open; the other, Brookside Country Club, is nearby in Worthington. A few holes on the back nine at The Lakes are adjacent to the Westerville Reservoir, crediting its name to the visually noteworthy holes.

Freshman earns MAC player of the week honors

At one point during the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, the Bobcats held a fourth-place position, fueled by a three-under round of 68 fired by freshman Peyton White. He led the field in par-4 scoring (four-under-par) through two rounds of play.

This second round of play ultimately led to the honor of Mid-American Conference player of the week for White, an accolade spurred by a top-five conference scoring average currently held by White (73).

“He’s leading our team in scoring average right now and that makes a huge difference over three rounds of golf,” Cooley said.

A shaky final day of play plagued Ohio, though, as they shot 23 strokes higher as a team, putting them in sole possession of ninth. Ohio did beat out fellow MAC opponent Northern Illinois (14th), but dropped to Toledo (7th) and Miami (6th).
