Some much-needed improvement Tuesday allowed Ohio to tie for fifth place at the Butler Spring Invitational at the Highland Golf Club in Indianapolis.
The Butler Spring Invitational was originally planned for a 54-hole tournament like the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate last week. Poor weekend weather and low temperatures, however, cut down the invitational to a short 36-hole stint over two days.
The Bobcats improved by 10 strokes after their Monday round, trimming their team score to 20 over par and squeezing out a tie with Valaparaiso for fifth place. Valaparaiso was alone in fifth after Monday, but second round 3-over and 5-over rounds from Garrett Willis and Mitchell Wittmann, respectively, failed to give the Crusaders any padding against the Bobcats’ gains Tuesday.
Zach Crawford once again proved his mettle by being the high finisher for the Bobcats at Highland. Crawford was only 3-over-par for his two rounds and tied for 13th place.
Zach Mandry and Ben Sattler both finished Tuesday tied for 30th place, both at 8 over par. Mandry had been 8 over after his finish Monday, but he pulled it together and lit up in the second round, shooting even par. Mandry’s finish was the largest two-day improvement by any of the Bobcats and was their lowest Tuesday score.
The Bobcats now must focus their attention on their final event of the regular season before the Mid-American Conference Championships. On April 14 and 15, they will compete in the•Wright State Invitational hosted at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro.
