Casa prepares for a night of international music

International Dance Night at Casa Nueva returns after a year-and-a-half absence.

When not spending his time teaching Spanish, anthropology and advising the Gay-Straight Alliance at Athens High School, Todd Fry has another passion: international music.

Todd “T-Fry” Fry is excited to bring International Dance Night back this Friday to Casa Nueva, 6 W. State Street. He started the night again after a year-and-a-half hiatus at the request of Josh Brown, Casa’s booking coordinator, and to expose students to a wide variety of music genres.

Fry plans to play upbeat Latin, Brazilian, Arabic, Indian and African styles and will take requests on the event’s Facebook page.

“It’s going to be popular dance music from these countries, like if someone went out to a club in one of these counties, it would be mostly music that you would hear there,” Fry said.

The event is particularly appealing to the large number of international students wanting to celebrate their heritage.

“I’m a Mexican-American, so I’m looking forward to Latin music…particularly Enrique Iglesias, my favorite,” said Miguel Gomez, a senior studying astrophysics.

Brice Gottesman, a senior studying meteorology, will accompany a friend, an international student, to the event.

“It’s good to broaden your horizons and meet new people, especially international students, because they can see a different outlook on the world, and a lot of people are kind of stuck in their own bubble,” Gottesman said.

Fry believes any student interested in international studies or traveling abroad can benefit from the experience of exploring the musical genres that will be played.

Almost 2,000 students come from different countries across the globe to study at Ohio University each year, according to a previous Post article.

“To be able to go out to a bar and hear music from around the world and be surrounded by international students is something that’s really exciting, versus going to a bar and just hearing the same old American music that they would normally hear,” Fry said.

A second International Dance Night is planned for March 28 and free for people over 21.

“(International Dance Night) is something that is new to OU – we don’t really have that…so, when we do, it’s really special,” Gomez said.
