Until Monday, the preliminary coronavirus vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna had set the stage for expected success in vaccinations. AstraZeneca broke suit when it released their vaccine, which promises less, but will be significantly cheaper than the other two.
Pfizer, in collaboration with BioNTech, as well as Moderna developed their vaccines using mRNA, which works differently than typical flu vaccines, which are on the rise this time of year. Rather than introducing the virus through a vaccine, mRNA transmission introduces genetic material from the virus, which then prompts your immune system to create antibodies without risking exposure.
AstraZeneca has passed the FDA’s minimum effectiveness for approval of 50%, but established a range of results between 70.4 and 90% success. Pfizer and Moderna reported 95%. AstraZeneca agreed to sell vaccine doses at-cost meaning only several dollars per unit, the other two have not and thus are not being seen as viable options for low-income countries.
