In Thursday’s episode of Supernatural, the audience was taken on a trip down memory lane to past seasons, but were still kept in the modern loop. If you couldn’t watch the episode live, here’s what you missed:
Sam spread himself too thin
Sam (Jared Padalecki) became the dad of the hunters in the bunker. Not by choice. There were 16 hunters out on jobs and they needed tips, lore and protection. Sam was all of that. Dean (Jensen Ackles) called Sam out on not sleeping, but that’s the pot calling the kettle black.
When Maggie (Katherine Evans) went missing, Sam immediately blamed himself for her death. Dean was the one to reel him to reality that she could still be alive.
The entire series has constantly showed Dean needs to protect Sam. John made sure of that. It’s different to see Sam in charge and Dean hang back like a housewife.
Michael still manages to wreak havoc
The boys realized Maggie missed her check-in, and when Sam looked at the bodycam footage, it looked like a ghoul took her. When they retraced her hunt, they ran into Bobby (Jim Beaver) and Mary (Samantha Smith) who are trying to find Maggie too.
After a series of puzzling twists, Dean figured it out. Neil, the old man’s nurse, was a djinn and instead of giving him blood, he was taking it.
But, Neil met Dean before when Michael was in control. Michael and Neil made an agreement that if Neil killed as many hunters as possible, he could bring his nightmares to life, which is why the case threw the boys off. Maggie’s nightmare was a vampire, Mr. Rawlings was dying alone and Bobby was his dead son. Neil tried to get inside Dean’s head but couldn’t, which is odd for a djinn and probably has something to do with Michael. Before Dean could bash Neil’s head in, Neil said Michael had many monsters waiting for Dean. And when Dean did bash it’s head in, he shot it dead more times than necessary.
Sam found Maggie and brought her back to the bunker.
It’s odd the show introduced Michael with such a bang and then two episodes later, Michael vanishes, considering the show highlighted the fact Ackles had never played another character but Dean. Michael could still be camping out in Dean’s mind after all.
The show revisits the second season
The episode flashbacked to season two’s episode “What Is and What Should Never Be,” where Dean was kidnapped by a djinn and was shown an alternate reality void of hunting. The rescue scene of Maggie was almost identical to Dean’s. The audience knew that and in a sense, saw how far the brothers have come.
