Student Senate held an open forum Thursday to let students voice their concerns, make suggestions and vote on one of the three safety apps available.
Students wrote down concerns or suggestions for Student Senate and had conversations with the commissioners at the forum.
Students took a survey to choose which free safety app they would want available for Ohio University.
Here are the apps:
LiveSafe
The app allows students to share information, tips and safety concerns with local police. The information can be given through picture, video or audio messaging.
LiveSafe also has the ability to summon help from police or be able to message police or family while walking home. There is also a SafeWalk feature which uses GPS monitoring to let your friends and family know where you are until you arrive safely to your destination.
The app also features resources for information and locations of safety resources both on and off campus.
LifeLine
This app can be used if the user feels unsafe. When activated, the user puts their thumb over the phone. If their thumb slips off, campus police are notified of the user’s location and contact information. A voice and an alarm will sound that the police are on their way if the user doesn’t deactivate the notification.
LifeLine connects to local police departments in Athens. However, if you are not in Athens, the app can still be used and notify the police station. Local police can notify the department in the city the user is in, even if you are studying abroad.
This app has customizable features and is compliant with students with disabilities, such as deaf, hearing impaired or mute.
Rave Guardian
Rave Guardian has a feature where you can create Personal Guardians, a network consisting of friends and family. There is a Call 911 button that immediately connects with safety personnel and shares your GPS location.
There is a safety timer that notifies friends if you haven’t arrived at your intended destination. It has messaging features that allow you to contact police, safety personnel or resident assistants if you see something suspicious or need support.
