Ohio falls to sixth place in Navy Classic over the weekend.
Ohio hit the road for its third consecutive weekend, and this time, it was off to Annapolis, Maryland for the 38th Annual Navy Classic.
Despite coming into the meet with confidence from their previous dual meets, the Bobcats did not perform as well as they had hoped.
Ohio finished sixth overall, a drop from last year’s third place finish, and tallying 79.5 team points. Princeton, who won the tournament, finished with 139 points while Kent State (130) and Wisconsin (101.5) rounded out the top three.
“Not the best day for the Bobcats,” Ohio coach Joel Greenlee said. “We need to go back to the drawing board, coach better and wrestle better”.
Despite a drop off in overall points, Greenlee and the Bobcats saw underclassmen continue to improve.
Ohio’s 133-pounder Cameron Kelly, 165-pounder Austin Reese, and HWT Jesse Webb all won the freshman/sophomore division at their respective weights.
Shakur Laney earned five wins this weekend in route to a third place finish. Laney’s most impressive victory was a 21-5 technical fall win over Bucknell’s Ben Bliss. Laney is 7-2 this season.
Redshirt senior Cody Walters returned to action on Saturday after missing last week’s Michigan State Open and finished in second place in the 174 class. Walters started strong earning a pin in his first contest over Navy’s Ryan Harman in the first period. Walters proceeded to shut out Brown’s Andrew LaBrie 4-0 and beat Bucknell’s Rustin Barrick 6-2. Walters would eventually suffer a 4-3 loss in the first place match to Princeton’s Jonathan Schleifer. Walters' record now sits at 6-1 on the season.

Phil Wellington, who also suffered his first loss of the season during the finals of the Navy Classic, recorded a 10-2 major decision victory over Princeton’s Ian Baker before winning in a double-tiebreaker 6-2 decision over Kent State’s Kyle Conel in the semifinals. Wellington lost in a 3-2 decision against Princeton’s Brett Harner in the 197-pound finals. Wellington's record is now 10-1.
Redshirt senior Spartak Chino went 4-2 on the weekend which earned Chino a fourth place finish at 157-pound division.
The Bobcats have a few weeks off before they open Mid-American Conference play against the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, Dec. 13 in Columbia, Missouri.
