A volunteer firefighter was found dead at the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Department from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Christopher D. Downs, a 47-year-old volunteer firefighter for the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Department was found dead Monday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call to the Jacksonville Fire Volunteer Department for a person bleeding, according to a news release from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies identified and pronounced Downs dead at the scene.
No foul play is suspected as of press time, according to the release.
The case is currently under investigation by both the Athens County Sheriff’s Office and the Athens County Coroner’s Office.
