Student Senate: Members get update from student trustees; appoint senator to university life commision

Three resolutions were passed and one was tabled at the Wednesday night Student Senate meeting.

Faith Voinovich and Austin McClain, Ohio University student trustees, gave a presentation about the August Board of Trustees meeting. This is Voinovich’s second year serving as a student trustee, and McClain was appointed in April.

In their presentation, they discussed enrollment and retention data, money that the university has saved on energy, textbooks, sustainability and facility improvement on campus.

The resolution to allocate funds to pay for office supplies for Student Senate and supplies that were used on their retreat passed. These funds will be used to buy labels for administrators, disinfecting wipes, card stock for name tags and pocket holders for resolutions and bills.

Members also passed the resolution to purchase supplies for a tabling event being held on Sept. 17 for Constitution Day called “Cookies and Constitutions.” At this event, members will be giving out cookies and copies of the U.S. Constitution to students.

The resolution to appoint Kaitlyn Booher, a senator at-large, to the University Life Commissions passed.

Booher said this committee works with students and student organizations on “passion projects.” She said she plans on helping students with involvement at school, such as registering students to vote.

Members decided to table a resolution to pay for candy that was bought to give out to students at the Involvement Fair.

“It was a good idea to buy candy for the involvement fair,” said Lydia Ramlow, Student Senate treasurer. “It was a big success.”

In the president’s report, Madison Sloat, Student Senate president, addressed the recent sexual assaults that have been reported since the Fall Semester began.

Sloat said students need to step up to combat these but the responsibility to change the culture at the university is a burden of both students and Ohio University.

Members also discussed an open forum discussion panel for students to voice their concerns, share experiences and provide new safety ideas about sexual assault on campus.

The dates for these events have not been announced yet.
