Cinema and Syntax: The Academy is jealous of Christopher Nolan

There is one season I love more than any other: awards season.

I look up the statistics regarding cinema awards all year long and start making predictions as to what movies will be on the ballots months in advance.

The Academy of Motion Pictures is notorious for snubbing people who deserved nominations, and there is one director who has influenced cinema tremendously in recent years but has not been nominated in the Academy Awards Best Director category: Christopher Nolan.

Nolan is the Leonardo DiCaprio of the Best Director category. The only difference between them is DiCaprio was a repeat nominee that didn’t win until his performance two years ago for The Revenant. There is another connecting theme between DiCaprio and Nolan: Everyone knows Nolan is a great director, so maybe he doesn’t need to be recognized for it because it’s so obvious. That’s where the Academy is wrong.

Noland received writing nominations for Memento and Inception, but he did not win. Both scripts were original screenplays, which is impressive on its own. But the fact Nolan is able to create entire worlds in paper then physically bring them to life in unimaginable ways is the true sign of his talent.

All of Nolan’s films are high-concept with a lot of visual components, so details are important. He is able to fully immerse people in his movies, and he does so in unconventional ways. From his plots to his visuals, Nolan has pushed the boundaries of film.

Nolan very well may be the best director of this generation — but it seems the Academy isn’t willing to give him an award for his unconventional ways. That might change this year because Nolan’s war movie Dunkirk is being revered as the best movie of the year. And if the Academy doesn’t acknowledge his achievements this time around, the members need to check their egos.
