The Beatles released Abbey Road, an album renowned for both its musical content and iconic cover, 48 years ago today.
The legendary cover features the four Beatles walking across the eponymous street's zebra crossing.
Neither the name of the record nor the band is on the album cover, which record label EMI claimed would hurt sales of the album — it sold four million copies in its first two months of release.
Sonically, Abbey Road features some of the Beatles' most well-known and critically praised songs, including "Come Together," "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." The second side features a 16-minute medley of short songs that closes with the aptly named "The End."
The last song recorded by all four Beatles before the group's breakup, "The End" concludes with perhaps the most quintessential Beatles lyric: "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."
