Between the Lines: Baseball is back, and that's a very good thing

Ah, Opening Day. It’s the first day of baseball, and all of our favorite teams are getting back out on the diamond to start their grueling 162-game chase for the World Series.

I know, I know — “Opening Day” was yesterday. But the Indians didn’t play, so for me, it didn’t happen.

Baseball creates that kind of devotion. Yesterday, while I watched my friends’ teams win pitching duels, lose slugfests and fail to hit off Jeff Samardzija, I enjoyed the baseball, but it wasn’t my team. I’ll admit I was a little jealous and maybe a little mean to Sports Editor Nick Robbe about the Reds’ pitchers having the worst hair in baseball, Brandon Phillips’ infuriating batting stance and Shin-Soo Choo not looking as good in a Cincinnati uniform as he did in Cleveland.

Sorry, Nick. I just can’t wait for baseball to really start. It’s been a long, cold winter, and if I have to hear one more person call Bryce Harper a “phenom,” I’m going to go crazy.
