Cinema and Syntax: Michael Bay just wants to be relevant again

In case you missed the big cinema news last week, an unexpected project was announced: a live-action Dora the Explorer movie is in the works.

But that’s only scratching the surface.

The film will be produced by the big-budget, intense-action director Michael Bay. Yes, you read that right. A children’s show about a bilingual explorer will become a film that is backed by the man who directed Transformers

And then the world ended. OK, that’s a little dramatic, but did anyone seriously expect a combination like this? If your answer is yes, you have a big imagination.

Bay has a talent for inducing sighs and eye rolls. He managed to create and kill a movie franchise in two films, but continues to make them. Transformers was a great movie. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a weak follow up, but it’s still acceptable. All of the other films in the series are just irrelevant and a waste of money. But since the decline of the once-beloved Transformers movies, Bay has tried and failed to grab people’s attention.

Bay has devoted all of his time to directing the garbage Transformers movies that he needed to spice things up a little bit. The only other project worth noting from the director and producer from the last 10 years are the Purge films, which still manage to attract audiences, and the TNT series The Last Ship. And even then, people don’t really know Bay is part of those ventures.

There is only one obvious reason Bay signed on to the Dora the Explorer film — he wants people to pay attention to him. He is like the child who screams and cries until people notice them. Bay just wanted to get people talking about him again — and, well, it worked.
