Ohio lost to Miami 3-2 in the morning and tied Xavier 3-3 in the afternoon round of the first day of Mid-American Conference match play at the Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Florida.
Coach Bob Cooley said the first event of 2016 was going to be a guide for men's golf expectations moving forward.
On Monday, those expectations played out as anticipated.
Ohio lost to Miami 3-2 in the morning and tied Xavier 3-3 in the afternoon round of the first day of Mid-American Conference match play at the Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Florida.
Match play is set up different than stroke play. There is no leaderboard. Instead, there is a bracket. In college golf, the bracket is set up with teams rather than individual players.
Players are pitted against each other and play 18 holes together. Whoever shoots the lowest score on the hole wins the hole. The overall winner is determined by who has won the most holes at the end of the match.
Peyton White, an Ohio junior, went 2-0 for the day and solidified himself as one of the better golfers in the MAC.
In both matches Ty Herriott, a junior, tied.
“We’ll be trying to improve on some things from the fall down there (at the MAC Match Play),” Cooley said. “Most of the players got better as the season went along, but we need to continue improving from that point.”
The Bobcats will fight for fifth place Tuesday morning with a shotgun start of 8:30 a.m.

Eighty-two miles away at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, coach Kelly Ovington and the women’s golf team are in a similar position as Cooley and his Bobcats at the MAC Match Play.
Coming off of a sluggish 3-2 morning loss to Oakland, Ohio recovered to beat Dayton 4-2 in the afternoon.
