Press Start: How the gaming community responded to the immigration ban

So how about that immigration ban? How has the gaming community responded to it? The game development scene is one that prizes what the Assassin’s Creed intros would call “a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs” and the ban’s deeply botched rollout has only served to get in the way of developers from the nations affected. Here is a quick rundown of the responses in the community.

Devolver Digital – The prolific and popular publisher of indie products has long been a shining beacon of creativity and class. Even while putting out games splattered with pixelated gore like Hotline Miami and Mother Russia Bleeds. In response to this, they’ve promised to demo games for developers stuck outside of the U.S. at the Game Developers Conference completely free. A spot there is worth its weight in gold and Devolver’s name carries weight.

Insomniac Games – The developer behind Ratchet and Clank and the upcoming Spiderman game for PS4 released a video condemning the ban as unconstitutional, un-American and urging action, noting how much of their team are immigrants.

Harmonix – The popular music game developer released this doozy of a rebuttal.

The American Civil Liberties Union – This group is actively litigating the Trump Administration, provoked in part because of his unofficial war with the press and his current Orwellian Editor tendencies. Polytron is selling FEZ for whatever people will pay for it and then donating the proceeds to ACLU. The creator of Revolution 1979, a historical fiction game about the Iranian Revolution based on his firsthand experiences, will be donating all the revenue from the game to the ACLU until Feb. 10. Similar responses can be found with the developers of Kentucky Route Zero and Nuclear Throne, and so on and so forth.

Remember, this will go on for four solid years. We are the majority. And the theme song of the majority is Rage Awakened.

Scream to the heavens! Scream at that rock! Scream in front of the White House! Scream just because! Take a cough drop because you screamed too much! Scream because Kingdom Hearts III doesn’t look like it’s coming out in your lifetime!
