Correction appended.
On Tuesday, Graduate Student Senate, or GSS, held its first general body meeting of the semester and swore in new members.
Joseph Ziorklui, GSS president, brought forward a resolution to appoint new Senate members. The resolution was passed, and all new members were appointed.
Moving forward, Joseph Shields, GSS adviser and dean of the Graduate College, facilitated the reading of oaths for each new appointment, including Ziorluki’s presidential appointment.
Senate then heard reports from Vice President Remington Burwell, Treasurer Charlotte Yang and Letitia Price, member of the orientation training and engagement committee.
Price discussed her goal of better supporting female graduate students and shared she would be bringing her ideas back to Senate with more details in the future.
Shields then took the floor and congratulated all the new appointees while encouraging them to enjoy their time on Senate. He emphasized the need to keep a good balance between classwork and Senate work.
The associate dean of the Graduate College, David Koonce, has been moved into a temporary position as associate dean of research and graduate education. He is expected to return to his regular position in the spring or summer.
Correction: A previous version of this article stated that Shields said David Koonce is temporarily being moved to dean of the Russ College of Engineering, when he meant to say he is temporarily moving to associate dean of research and graduate education. This article has been updated to reflect the most accurate information.
