Ohio University Police investigating threat from social media account claiming relationship with ISIS

Chief Powers emailed the student body Friday night.

In a university-wide email sent Friday night, Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers indicated his department is investigating a threatening online post made by a social media account claiming to be related to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS.

In the email, Powers said "the post contained no specific threat against any individual but simply referenced Ohio University."

He added that OUPD had consulted with federal and state partners to determine that the risk associated with the post is likely low.

The post, Powers said, contained directory information from one of OU's academic departments "that is routinely available through public platforms."

However, Powers indicated that no "personal or home-related" information was included in the threatening post. Members of that academic department have been contacted, he said.
