Let’s get marvelous. Marvel Studios revealed the first trailer for its upcoming superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel.
The trailer, which was released during an episode of Good Morning America, is our first glimpse at Captain Marvel since she was teased in the post credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War. It is clear that Captain Marvel is going to play a huge role in the next Avengers film, which adds to the anticipation for Brie Larson’s big screen debut as the Kree hero.
In the trailer, it is revealed that the movie is set in the ’90s, showcasing a digitally de-aged Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) (complete with hair and two eyes!) discovering Carol Danvers, who had crashed through the roof of a Blockbuster Video store. It is seen that Danvers already has her Kree superpowers, and she is returning to Earth for an unknown reason. She has no clear memory of her past on Earth, only sudden visions and dreams of her history on Earth, such as her time as an Air Force pilot.
The film’s plot will take heavy inspiration from the Kree-Skrull war, which has been unexplored by the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to date. This establishes the Skrull, a shapeshifting alien race, into the MCU and potentially could lead into the next big arc in the MCU post-Infinity War: the fan-favorite Secret Invasion.
The female-fronted flick features Larson as Danvers, an ex-Air Force pilot who left Earth to embrace her alien heritage. Danvers is a human whose genes had been spliced with alien Kree DNA, which allows her access to a number of superpowers such as superhuman strength, speed, flight, as well as the ability to emit energy blasts with her hands. Danvers’ Kree DNA also provides her with an immunity to most poisons and toxins and the ability to survive in space. Danvers joins an elite Kree military team called the Starforce led by an “enigmatic commander” played by Jude Law. Law will play the original Captain Mar-Vell, who is a mentor to Danvers and eventually gives her the mantle of “Captain Marvel.”
Captain Marvel is the 21st and latest addition to the expansive MCU, which produced several of the highest-grossing films to ever hit the box office, such as Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War. Captain Marvel is the franchise’s first female-focused film and one that sets up to be one of high cultural impact, such as Black Panther was. In a genre that is primarily focused on muscular men, Captain Marvel brings an immense amount of woman power to the table. In fact, the character Captain Marvel is one of the strongest in the entire Marvel Universe, and is considered the strongest Avenger.
While fans will have to painstakingly wait until March 8 to get the full scope on Captain Marvel and how she will play a role in the next Avengers movie, they can rest assured that Larson will bring justice to the character. Here’s how those fans reacted on Twitter:
