How Athens responded: SCOTUS on same-sex marriage

The Supreme Court of the U.S. ruled Friday that all states would have to recognize same-sex marriages. The response on Twitter was large and immediate nationwide. Here is what Athens had to say about the decision.

In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States has legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

The U.S. joins nearly two dozen other countries that allow same-sex marriage. Married same-sex couples can now enjoy the same benefits and legal rights as married heterosexual couples.

“Ultimately the message has been sent to gay and lesbian couples and all LGBT people that we are not second-class citizens, we are going to be treated equally and fairly under the law,” said Delfin Bautista, director of the Ohio University LGBT Center.

Though the decision has settled one of the biggest civil rights issues, Bautista said there is still work to be done.

“Marriage equality is not the end goal, it’s an exciting goal, but there’s still work to be done around bullying and trans inclusion and many other things,” Bautista said. “Let’s celebrate; and tomorrow, we continue the struggle.”
