Faculty Senate: Members to discuss Faculty Handbook clarifications

Senators will discuss Faculty Handbook policies on sexual misconduct and faculty classifications at Monday night’s Faculty Senate meeting.

Ohio University President Duane Nellis and Executive Vice President and Provost Chaden Djalali will open Faculty Senate’s February meeting.

For a first reading, the Educational Policy and Student Affairs Committee will bring forward a resolution on graduate retakes.

According to the resolution, students may not retake a graduate-level course if the prior attempt has met degree requirements. Retaking a graduate-level course will not remove or replace a grade from a previous attempt. All course attempts and grades appear on transcripts and are calculated in the graduate GPA. The current language incorrectly implies that retaken classes do not raise the cumulative GPA.

The Professional Relations Committee will discuss four resolutions regarding processes and clarifications in the Faculty Handbook.

A resolution to correct the process for complaints involving sexual misconduct as well as a resolution to clarify the process for investigation and review allegations of misconduct not involving sexual misconduct, discrimination or research misconduct will be addressed.

For a second reading, the resolution to clarify recusal processes for the college Professional Ethics Committees will be voted on.

“When an allegation of a violation of professional ethics is received by the chair of the college Professional Ethics Committee, the committee chair will inform the members of the committee of the pending case. Committee members who have a close personal or professional relationship with the accused or complainant, will recuse themselves from the case,” the resolution reads.

For the final resolution, there will be a first reading to revise faculty classifications. The current classification system has not been responsive to modifications or new types of faculty positions.

At the meeting, Faculty Senate members will also hear an update on Regional Higher Education.

The meeting will be held in Walter Hall 235 at  7:10 p.m.
