Vehicle fire, generator battery thefts and menacing included in past week’s police reports

A man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, assault and criminal mischief

It’s cold in Athens, but some crimes on campus have begun to heat up.

The Ohio University Police Department received a report Sunday night from an OU employee regarding a male that had kicked the front entry doors of Bird Arena. The glass in the door broke, according to the report. The case is still under investigation.

Early Friday morning, OUPD and the Athens Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire at OU parking lot 153. The fire was extinguished by firefighters and the cause of the fire was found to be electrical.

The vehicle suffered heavy damage in the engine compartment, underneath the vehicle and in the front end, according to the report. No one was injured and no other vehicles were damaged.

Later that evening, OUPD responded to a report of an assault in Atkinson House. After an investigation, police determined that a man had refused to leave the victim’s residence. He then assaulted the victim and damaged property.

That 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with aggravated trespassing, assault and criminal mischief, and was transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on a $1,300 bond.

Additionally, a female was charged with menacing Feb. 9 on suspicion of threatening to fight another female, causing the threatened female to believe she would be physically harmed.

Hours before the menacing report, a parking enforcement officer from OU’s Parking Services contacted OUPD and reported that five of his department’s vehicles had been damaged. The case is pending investigative leads, according to the report.

Between Wednesday and Thursday last week, OUPD received two reports of theft from an OU employee. The employee reported the theft of a generator battery in the Cady House and True House attic. Both residence halls are located on South Green.

On the city’s side, the Athens Police Department responded to a report Friday of a burglary on East State Street. There were no suspects at the time, according to the report.

APD also received a report last Wednesday relating to identity fraud. An Athens man reported his and his spouse’s identity were used to file a fraudulent tax return. The victim has directed the matter to the Internal Revenue Service and the case is closed, according to the report.
