TV Review: Everyone’s trying to escape and no one can be trusted on ‘American Horror Story: 1984’

Though last week’s episode of American Horror Story wasn’t as thrilling as it could’ve been, this week’s episode heavily made up for it.

Last week’s episode ended on a cliffhanger, with the counselors and Nurse Rita (Angelica Ross) trapped in two different cabins, both about to be attacked. This week’s episode picks up right where the previous episode left off, but provides a ridiculous amount of twists.

After being attacked by the Richard, a.k.a. The Night Stalker (Zach Villa), Ray (DeRon Horton) is saved by Chet (Gus Kenworthy). Rita, Brooke (Emma Roberts), Ray and Chet all get split up but agree to meet at the parking lot.

Ray and Chet fall into Mr. Jingles’ (John Caroll Lynch) spiked pit, and though Ray misses the spikes, Chet is impaled through the shoulder. While they are trying to figure a way out, Brooke is deciding whether or not she should go get help.

This is when the most intriguing storyline is introduced: Rita isn’t actually who she says she is.

Rita drugs Brooke, and the audience is given a look into her back story. Rita is actually a psychology student named Donna Chambers who studies serial killers, and her current target is Mr. Jingles. After a visit with Mr. Jingles, she convinces him to escape so she can study his behavior at the camp.

“Rita is not Rita,” Xavier said. “We found the real one bound and gagged in the boat house.”

While Ray is stuck in the pit with Chet, he believes Chet is passed out from the pain, so he tells him the story about the time he accidentally killed someone at a frat party. When he discovers Chet is actually awake, he leaves him in the pit to die. However, he quickly gets his comeuppance when Mr. Jingles decapitates him.

Meanwhile, Trevor (Matthew Morrison), Xavier (Cody Fern) and Montana (Billie Lourde) discover their attacker isn’t the real Mr. Jingles, but posers in the nearby town dressed up like Mr. Jingles. However, the real Mr. Jingles quickly arrives and kills both of the imposters, but the others get away.

Xavier and Trevor stop to help Chet out of the pit, while Montana goes to find help. However, when Montana has a run in with The Night Stalker, the two begin making out and she questions why he hasn’t managed to “kill her yet.” One can only assume she means Brooke.

The episode is filled with so many twists and turns, and it creates a wonderful setup for the rest of the season.
