The Weekender: Cooperatives and a Letterman comedian

The Weekender is here again, this time with tips about where to entertain your parents. 

So, it's the weekend again. This time, you get to celebrate with your mothers and fathers as this weekend is Parents Weekend at Ohio University. Be sure to check out the calendar of events below to find the happening places around Athens so you can keep your parents entertained.


Post Modern: Cooperatives are a growing trend in Athens. Cooperative living and working organizations are owned and managed by the people who live and work in them. Co-ops such as Casa Nueva, The Vine, and Athensworks are some of the ones currently in Athens. 

When the ceiling began to collapse at 23 Elliott St., the residents didn’t have to call their landlord and wait to get it fixed. Instead, they voted at their weekly meeting and used their house funds to solve the problem themselves. (link)


Second Cities: The touring improv troupe, which once included comedians such as Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell, performs sketches, songs and improvisations this weekend. (Link)

Eddie Brill: The man who used to warm up the audience for David Letterman on The Late Show will be cracking jokes at Donkey Coffee and Espresso on Thursday. (Link

Queer Film Screening: In the past the LGBT Center has been known to show fun movies for its Queer Hollywood series, but this year the center plans to use these films to raise awareness for real-life queer issues. (Link)

Mrs. Helen Highwater: Established in 2013, Mrs. Helen Highwater has based itself on attempting to bring a “fresh and clammy” sound to the Athens music scene. (Link)
