Recently I had been hearing a lot about the Maybelline Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation Stick, and I wanted to give it a try. This foundation is a revolutionary product, which Maybelline coins as “the first gel stick foundation” on their Website. It is only about $7 and also boasts an anti-shine core which promises to “instantly dissolve excess oil.”
The packaging is similar to that of lipstick – you remove the lid, twist the product up and apply it directly to your face then blend. The first time I used this product it felt unconventional – I felt like Topanga on Boy Meets World when she draws that big heart around her face with lipstick. Instead of drawing a heart, though, I applied the foundation in stripes starting from the middle of my face and working outward, then blended it with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.
Applying foundation with this technique allows you to get the most coverage in the area that you need it with less product around the edges of your face, making it easier to blend out onto your neck and less likely that you’ll develop that dreaded foundation line.
At first, I thought this foundation was great. It applied smoothly, had great coverage and its stick-form made it easy to build the foundation in places that needed a bit more coverage, diminishing my need for concealer. As the day wore on though, I noticed in the right lighting that it looked too thick on my face and I wrote it off as an operator error.
However after trying to apply this product using a couple other methods, I noticed that nothing helped the way it appeared on my skin, and it seemed like it was almost impossible for me to get an even coverage. As far as the anti-shine core goes, when I used this product my skin was noticeably less oily than normal but it was almost too dry, which I think contributed to the cakey appearance of the foundation.
Overall, I prefer liquid foundations to ones with a gel-type consistency, as I’ve noticed they blend better and they build more smoothly. The Maybelline Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation is definitely easy to apply and gives good coverage, but it just doesn’t work well for my skin type and I will not be repurchasing it.
