Athens County reported 80 new COVID-19 cases last week, bringing the total count to 5,038. Athens remains a level 3, or red, county in Ohio’s Public Health Advisory System for high levels of COVID-19 exposure and spread.
In the past week, nine individuals were hospitalized due to the coronavirus, and two new deaths were reported. The death toll currently stands at 56.
So far, 9,987 Athens residents have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine through the Athens City-County Health Department. There are 6,757 Athens residents who are fully vaccinated.
On April 13, Ohio University announced all students who had appointments to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would receive the two-dose Pfizer vaccine after a statewide pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Jack Pepper, administrator at the Athens City-County Health Department, said the temporary change will not slow Athens’ or OU’s vaccination efforts.
OU reported a 0.6% daily positivity rate among students April 14. Three of the 29 residence halls were reported to be at the orange alert level as of April 15, with Carr Hall having the highest positivity rate at 0.6%. The rest of the residence halls remained at the lowest alert level with 0% positivity rates.
Isolation and quarantine housing was at 3.36% and 1.93% capacity, respectively, as of April 15.
