City Council: Additional art pieces will be added to traffic control boxes

Those driving around Athens may soon see new art pieces pop up on traffic control boxes.

Athens City Council accepted Athens Municipal Arts Commission’s Art Outside of the Box recommendations on Monday.

Those recommendations are for 10 new pieces of art for traffic control boxes throughout the city. Mayor Steve Patterson said there are 20 traffic control boxes that have art on them so far, and the art lasts for about three to five years on each box.

“These are local artists, so you’ll be seeing these going up likely at the end of summer and into fall … then you’ll start seeing things that will hopefully cheer you up,” Patterson said.

Council also appointed Jasmine Facun to the Environment and Sustainability commission Monday in order to fill a recent vacancy.

The appointment follows the leave of Cliff Hamilton, whose term ended on Feb. 19. Councilman Sam Crowl, D-3rd Ward, said Facun was considered for appointment to the commission last year but was unable due to residency requirements.

“She is a perfect person for this commission,” he said. “She has a lot of experience in stream and wetlands remediation and looking at the effects of our wetlands.”

In addition to Facun’s appointment, the current chair of the Shade Tree Commission, David Ingram, was reappointed.
