Baseball: What to know ahead of Dayton

Back in mid-March, Ohio (9-25, 4-11 Mid-American Conference) played a near four-and-a-half hour, 12-inning nailbiter against Dayton. The final score of 10-9 was decided on a failed pickoff attempt in the top of the final inning, which Ohio was unable to recover from in the bottom.

Tuesday, the Bobcats will have the chance to even the series, recovering from their mistake in its mid-week rematch against the Flyers. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the matchup:

Previous matchup

The Bobcats’ first run-in with the Flyers came March 18, as previously mentioned, in a drawn-out loss. With three hits apiece from freshman second-baseman Matt Ineich and sophomore shortstop JR Nelson, Ohio was able to overcome a couple of horrid defensive innings, keeping up with Dayton all the way through. The death blow was a missed pickoff attempt from freshman pitcher Julian Robertson, which allowed DiMartini to score, unearned. Ohio was unable to recover in the bottom of the 12th, giving Dayton a steal of a win at Bob Wren.

Players to watch: Ohio’s pitchers

With typical Tuesday starter, freshman Hunter Winston, receiving a new role as Ohio’s Sunday starter, Ohio was left answering questions on the fly last Tuesday. The start was given to sophomore Landon Price, who made it just a single inning against Marshall, giving up 3 runs on 16 total pitches. Ohio may not return to Price as the starter, but regardless not digging itself into a hole with its starting pitcher will be key for a Tuesday win on the road.
