Letter from the Editor: Giving Day supports The Post's legacy, empowers next generation of media leaders

As Giving Day approaches, I am filled with pride to be part of The Post, a publication that has been an essential part of Ohio University for over 100 years. Our legacy, however, would not be what it is today without the continued support of alumni and donors who ensure future generations of Posties can leave their mark on this historic publication.

Giving Day is crucial because it allows us to do more than just write stories — it enables us to experience the hands-on learning opportunities that set The Post apart from other campus publications. The donations we receive fund the "extras" that elevate our work, from networking trips to places like New York City and New Orleans to the equipment we use, such as cameras, microphones and tripods.

These are the tools and experiences that help The Post thrive and make our students competitive candidates in the job market, which I can personally attest to, as my work at The Post has led to internship offers from Fortune 500 companies like Great American Insurance Group, GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney.

This year, The Post has published over 3,800 stories, produced more than 70 videos, and won six prestigious awards. None of this would be possible without the financial support we receive. Donations to Giving Day help fund new technology, expand our multimedia efforts and allow us to offer more paid positions to our student staff. These funds are essential to continuing The Post's legacy of excellence as the media landscape continues to evolve into a multi-platform, digital-first world.

The Post has operated with a budget in the black for four consecutive years, a testament to our financial responsibility and ability to sustain ourselves. We’ve raised over $82,000 in advertising revenue to help with operational costs, but it’s the Giving Day donations that allow us to go above and beyond. Contributions from alumni, such as the Laura Salomon Fund, a $100,000 donation, have had a lasting impact, ensuring we can continue to provide students with meaningful experiences.

As Giving Day approaches on April 2, I encourage you to consider donating. Your contributions, no matter the size, help ensure The Post continues to thrive for another 100 years. Donating on Giving Day also maximizes the matching system, increasing the impact of your generosity.

Next year, I am proud to be stepping into The Post's first-ever Business Strategies position, where I will focus on recruiting and maintaining students interested in advertising, journalism, media, broadcast, photography and computer science. Although it is an exciting new role, it is an opportunity that would not exist without the support we receive through Giving Day.

Thank you for helping us continue the legacy of The Post. Your contributions directly impact the future of our publication and contribute to shaping the next generation of media professionals. If you would like to support The Post early, visit our Giving Day link here.
