Wrestling: Ohio suffers a 22-12 defeat against SIUE

Ohio (7-4, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) fell to SIU Edwardsville (7-6, 4-1 MAC) by a score of 22-12.

The only outlier matchup for Ohio was a 17-3 victory for SIUE in the 125-pound weight class. SIU Edwardsville seemed to be a problem for Ohio the entire meet. Despite winning his match, No. 26 ranked Jordan Greer still struggled with only a 2-point difference separating what would be a win or a loss. The only weight classes Ohio won were the 149, 165, 184 and 285-pound weight classes. All of these wins were only by single digits, which didn't give Ohio any wiggle room relating to the score.

The 133-pound weight class also resulted in a loss for Ohio as redshirt senior TJ England lost to redshirt sophomore Marcel Lopez, 5-2. The 141-pound weight class didn't fare well for Ohio either, as redshirt sophomore Mason Brugh lost to sophomore Danny Martinez by a fall. Ohio's lower weight classes seemed to struggle in this meet and couldn't get Ohio many overall points on the board.

Ohio's first win came in the 149-pound weight class, with redshirt sophomore Derek Raike defeating sophomore Hayden Whidden, winning 4-1. The 157-pound weight class was another loss for Ohio as redshirt sophomore Logan Cravatas was defeated by redshirt sophomore Eric Almarinez, 4-2.

Ohio secured a narrow win in the 165-pound weight class, with redshirt sophomore Jack Lledo barely escaping fellow redshirt sophomore Bradley Gillum with a 4-3 victory. This was the closest match in the meet, with only 1 point deciding who would be victorious. Ohio again lost in the 174 weight class, with senior Luke Odom defeating redshirt junior Robert Gaylord with a score of 4-1.

Ohio's third win of the meet came from the 184-pound weight class, with redshirt freshman Jeremy Olszko defeating SIU Edwardsville's Deron Pulliam with a score of 5-1; the biggest margin that Ohio would win by in any of the matches during this meet. Ohio lost in the next weight division, the 197-pound weight class, with SIU Edwardsville's Nick Nosler defeating Ohio's redshirt sophomore Austin Starr 5-1.

The final weight class of 285-pound weight class went to Ohio, with Jordan Greer barely inching out a victory in matches where he usually dominates. His opponent, Bryson Buhk, fought hard, with the match coming down to the final seconds, after which Greer was awarded the victory with a score of 8-6.

Despite the disappointing loss against SIU Edwardsville, Ohio continues its end-of-season road trip against Buffalo next week. The next meet will be the last before the MAC Championships.
