Women’s Basketball: What to know for Ohio’s matchup with Buffalo

Ohio (4-18, 1-9 Mid-American Conference) returns home to The Convo on Saturday to face a tough test against Buffalo (19-4, 8-3 MAC). Looking ahead at the seven-game gauntlet Ohio will face to finish regular season play, postseason chances are slim but winning against a strong Buffalo team could help change the tide.

Buffalo itself is on a two-game losing streak entering this game. However, with MAC Player of the Year candidate Chellia Watson on the team’s roster, it will be a challenge for Ohio to shut down the Bulls’ offense to secure the victory.

Here is everything to know ahead of the matchup:

Buffalo notes

The Bulls, led by fifth-year guard Chellia Watson, have been one of the MAC’s best teams this season. Buffalo sits second in the MAC behind Ball State, and third-year coach Becky Burke has her team rolling. Buffalo is coming off two straight losses to Toledo and Coastal Carolina, but its 19-4 overall record speaks for itself. This team will be firmly contending for hardware in March.

Player to Watch: Chellia Watson

The fifth-year guard from Winder, Georgia, is well on her way to a second straight MAC scoring title even though her scoring dropped from 23 points per game in 2023-24 to 20.1 points per game this season. The Bulls fell just short of the MAC title last season, losing to Kent State in the championship game in Cleveland, but Watson's play this season makes her Bulls team a prime candidate to lift that trophy come March.
