Basketball: Everything to know ahead of Ohio’s matchup against Buffalo

Ohio (3-13, 1-5 MAC) fell at Toledo Saturday and has lost its last four games. It will continue play Wednesday, once again away from Athens, when it visits Buffalo (15-2, 4-2 MAC). Ohio and Buffalo have had vastly different seasons but a win for Ohio could be the turning point for a struggling team.

There is some optimism for the Bobcats, the Bulls are 1-1 against common opponents, losing to Kent and beating Bowling Green. The Bobcats lost to both teams but should have optimism when looking at these matchups and not let the record of these Bulls intimidate them going into the matchup.

Here is everything that you need to know heading into the matchup:

The history of the matchup:

The Bulls have been the favorites historically over the past 15 years, winning two-thirds of the previous games. The two teams have competed 27 times over that span, with the Bulls winning the last four including seven of the last 10 matchups.

Players to Watch:

Ohio: Kate Dennis

Ohio will have to rely on some veteran play against this successful Buffalo team. One of the team leaders is senior Kate Dennis, who has played Buffalo a few times in her college career and has found success in both point-producing and on the glass with an average of 7 points and four rebounds in the matchups last season. She will be a huge piece on both ends of the floor to help Ohio find an early rhythm in this one. Ohio also should look to some of its younger players and get them involved against a tough opponent.

Buffalo: Chellia Watson

Watson has been the offensive juggernaut for a powerful Buffalo group. She averages 17.9 points per game this season. The offense will run through her and look for her to keep up her 44% shooting from the field. Watson has been all around the court for this team, averaging five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Ohio will have to look to take her out of the game if they want to win this one because she makes the whole team go.
