Artist Spotlight: Maycon Devon paves own path with music

Out of Fort Myers, Florida emerges Maycon Devon, a rising R&B and pop musician. It makes perfect sense as to why Devon is pursuing this career, as music is nothing new for him.

“I’ve always liked music, ever since I was a child,” Devon said. “My mom was the one to show me music in the first place, and she saw that I was interested, and she was like ‘yeah, let's do it.’”

However, Devon only began to seriously pursue music in 2022, three years after moving to the United States from Brazil. He initially started out recording covers before eventually creating and posting his first song “All Your Fault,“ when he was 17 years old in 2023

The song details a former relationship and is meant to be written as a letter that was never sent. Devon explained that the song was about blaming an ex-lover who did not realize their relationship devolved into toxicity. It also emphasizes how difficult it can be to end a relationship, even when it turns toxic, because of the developed emotional attachments.

Devon said the style of Billie Eilish’s music influenced his music.

"Something in her music just feels different when you hear it, and it has a different vibe,” Devon said.

However, Devon also made it clear he does not intend to copy her style.

“I don’t wanna copy anyone, but you have to take inspiration from some people, and for me, she’s one inspiration for my music,” Devon said.

Devon also explained how it felt to make the song as he is making his music alone. He even switched to online school for his senior year to pursue his music further.

“My music is not professional at the moment, but I’m learning as I go,” Devon said. “I don’t want to wait until I’m 100% good at it to make it. I started looking on YouTube for tutorials, (and) there are a lot of tutorials on YouTube. But it’s hard to find the best ones and trying to find ones that aren’t offering you something to buy.”

However, the art of music making is not the only thing Devon learned while launching his career. He also learned to navigate distribution, trademarks and promotion as he runs all of his social media accounts and promotes music himself.

He also detailed his work on his music video. While many believe that music videos are on their way out in the era of streaming, Devon believes each video can still be entertaining and can allow for people to get a grasp of what the artist was going for with their lyrics. As much as he likes music videos, Devon said it was hard to create a music video with no budget.

“It’s hard because you don’t want it to look like you have no budget, even if you have no budget,” Devon said. “You want it to look great.”

However, it is not all struggle. When asked about the best parts of his career so far, he expressed excitement at getting a music note next to his YouTube channel name. It is an indicator that he’s an official artist on the site, and the process typically takes three months to apply.

Devon also explained the excitement he felt when his song got its first 100 streams, which was a huge milestone for him.

“That was like ‘Oh my God, that’s so good, that’s amazing,’” he said. “For me, it was like it was (like) a million streams because it’s your first time seeing something like that.”

Devon does not plan to stop at a hundred streams. He has quite a few plans for the future, such as releasing a Christmas song. However, he plans to release a few more singles within the next two years with accompanying music videos.

He plans to pursue his music full-time and make a career out of it, and he encourages others to do so, as well.

“For anyone that wants to do music, you just have to do it, just pursue your dream, and no matter what the struggles are, you can overcome it,” Devon said. “If you can put your mind to it, it can be turned into reality.”
