Police Blotter: Shut up and take my money; don’t shoot your eye out

Friday, Dec. 20

The long haul

While on patrol Dec. 20, Athens County Sheriff’s deputies noticed a man walking along state Route 56 close to Lightfritz Ridge Road in New Marshfield.

The man was offered a ride to his destination by deputies, but he declined. Shortly after, deputies returned to patrol.

Triple whammy

The Ohio State Highway Patrol came into contact with a wanted individual at the Athens and Meigs county line Dec. 20. The individual had three warrants out of Athens County.

The Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to assist by transferring the individual to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to the Athens County Sheriff's Office.

No further action was required, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Saturday, Dec. 21

Pocket dial

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 hang-up call Dec. 21. Deputies were then dispatched to Oakdale Road and patrolled the area looking for the caller.

Deputies were unable to make contact with the caller, so they found the address from the phone number, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Once at the address, deputies found everything was okay and returned to patrol.

Slander

Deputies were informed over the phone that an individual was slandering the complainant's name on social media Dec. 21. The complainant was then informed the offender had the right to do so.

No action was further taken.

Sunday, Dec. 22

Shut up and take my money

At a business on state Route 550, a customer became agitated. Athens County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched and spoke to the customer.

The customer agreed with deputies after they told the customer he or she could not be in the business creating a disturbance and that any disagreement was a civil matter, according to the Sheriff’s Office. 

The customer paid and left with no further problems. Deputies returned to patrol.

Phone troubles

An individual called to report a theft from a vehicle Dec. 22; however, the individual’s phone was not working well, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Deputies met the individual at Speedway to take the report on the vehicle and then returned to patrol according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Monday, Dec. 23

Crash and run

Ohio State Highway Patrol arrived on the scene of a crash at Barnhart Road and Bethany Ridge Road. While on the scene, troopers experience an individual resisting detainment.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to assist, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived on scene they found the individual was no longer resisting.

Deputies assisted with traffic and then returned to patrol.

Don’t shoot your eye out

A complaint of criminal damage was filed Dec. 23 for the windows in a complainant's home in the Village of Glouster being shot out with a BB gun, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

Once deputies were on the scene, a report was taken and information was gathered. Then deputies made contact with the potential suspects.

The case will be sent to the Glouster Police Department and will remain under review, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Tuesday, Dec. 24

Woot woot

A commercial alarm went off on United Lane causing deputies to be dispatched Tuesday, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Once on scene deputies looked around the building and found nothing to be wrong and no key holder. Deputies attempted to contact the key holder but were unsuccessful.

Deputies left a note for the building owner letting them know the alarm went off and to update the alarm, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Report of self-harm

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies received a report that a woman wanted to harm herself. They proceeded to make contact with her, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

After speaking with her, they received consent to view her messages. No threat of self-harm was found.

Wednesday, Dec. 25

Give chase

While the Athens County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol Wednesday in the Village of Albany due to recent thefts in the area, deputies observed a biker who had an active warrant out for his arrest. 

The man then fled away from deputies to a hide at his residence in a shed. The man was then taken into custody and transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according the Sheriff’s Office.

Opossum obstruction

At a house on Converse Street in Chauncey, a report was made Wednesday of an opossum that refused to leave the caller’s porch, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

Once on scene, deputies found the opossum was not injured. The deputies did not have the equipment needed to deal with the opossum and advised the caller to call the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to remove the opossum, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
