Police Blotter: Emu given warning for fleeing, eluding officers

Friday, Nov. 15

To light or to not light

Deputies from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded Nov 15. to a traffic hazard on Brimstone Road in Coolville.

After monitoring the area, deputies found one of the residences had a spotlight pointing toward the roadway when vehicles drove by. 

Deputies warned the man for disorderly conduct and the light was later taken down. 

Emotionally distraught person

The Ohio University Police Department responded to Adams Hall on 63 S. Green Drive to an emotionally disturbed person Nov. 15. 

The individual was transported to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital for an emergency pre-screen evaluation.

Saturday, Nov. 16

Bambi’s mother

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Connett Road on a report of a potential deceased deer on a playground Nov. 16. Deputies arrived and found the deer was deceased.

Arrangements were made to remove it and deputies returned to patrol, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Reckless driving

Athens County Sheriff's Office deputies took a report from a resident of Mill Street in Chauncey who called about a reckless driver Nov. 16. 

The caller reported the driver was sliding and conducting the vehicle at a high rate of speed in an alleyway. 

The vehicle driver saw the caller taking photos and cursed at the caller, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

Hit and skip

Deputies responded Nov. 16 to Broad Street in Glouster for a hit-and-skip accident, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Deputies spoke to the complainant who advised they would follow up with the Glouster Police Department. 

Gunshot?

According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were connected to a caller from Gun Club Road in New Marshfield for a reported gunshot Nov. 16. 

The caller was advised that youth gun season had commenced and deputies returned to patrol. 

Intoxicated male on the loose

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Columbia Road in Albany for a report of a suspicious man in the roadway Nov. 16. 

While en route, units were informed the man was now at the Gordon K Bush Ohio University Airport. Contact was made with the man who informed them he had been walking for some time. 

Units determined the man to be heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. The man was arrested for disorderly conduct by intoxication and was taken to the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail with incident.

Sunday, Nov. 17

Destruction of property

OUPD responded to Jefferson Hall where a man was arrested Nov. 17. 

He was arrested on charges of criminal mischief, public indecency, obstructing official business and resisting arrest according to OUPD. 

Missing property 

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Glouster for an assault Nov. 17. Deputies arrived and spoke with an individual who said the assault happened earlier and they now had property missing. 

Deputies spoke to another party who said they didn’t have the property and he was assaulted as well. The case is being referred to the Glouster Police Department for follow-up. 

Family dollar needles

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Family Dollar in Coolville to recover several needles found on the property Nov. 17. 

After securing the paraphernalia, deputies successfully disposed of it, according to a press release.

Failed break-in

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to The Coonskin Crossing for a business alarm Nov. 17. Through investigation, deputies discovered two juveniles attempted to break into the building to steal items from inside. 

Both juveniles were later arrested and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Lost friend

Deputies were dispatched to a business in Jacksonville for a suspicious person Nov. 17. 

The individual was trying to locate a friend’s house but got lost. Deputies gave the individual a courtesy ride home and returned to patrol, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Monday, Nov. 18

Energetic emu

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Circle Drive in New Marshfield for an incident report Nov. 18. The caller declared two dogs had entered the emu’s pen and were chasing her emu. 

The emu was able to escape from the dogs but in doing so got free from the pen. Deputies and dog wardens located the emu at a neighboring property. 

After many failed attempts, they finally cornered the emu into a fence and captured it. A neighbor assisted in loading the emu into the bed of his truck and drove the emu back to his pen. 

The emu was not harmed or injured. The emu was given a warning for fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. Units resumed patrol. 

Domestic dispute

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Jacksonville for a third-party report of a domestic dispute Nov. 18. While on their way the parties involved left the area in a truck. 

Deputies patrolled the area and did not track down the vehicle of the description, according to a press release. 

Illegal burning

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office was requested by the Chauncy Fire Department for assistance with an illegal burn Nov. 18 at the Sandstone Apartments in The Plains. 

The fire was put out and a report was taken, according to a press release.  

Tuesday, Nov. 19

Medical assistance

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to North Coolville Ridge Road in Athens to assist ACEMS with a violent male in need of medical attention Tuesday. 

The man was later transported to the hospital for medical treatment without any incident.

Light left on

Deputies responded to Torch Road in Coolville regarding a light being on in an abandoned residence Tuesday, according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Upon arrival, it was discovered the previous resident might still be inhabiting the residence. The complainant was advised to have the resident evicted if there are ongoing issues. 

Locked out

Deputies responded to Federal Hocking High School regarding a staff member locking their keys inside their car Tuesday

Once deputies arrived, they unlocked the individual’s vehicle and the keys were recovered. Deputies returned to patrol according to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. 

Wednesday, Nov. 20

Traffic crash

OUPD responded near James Hall to take a report for a hit-and-skip traffic crash Wednesday. 

The charges were an accident leaving the scene and private property according to OUPD. 

Recovered property

OUPD collected contraband Wednesday at 118 Ridges Circle Drive. They collected a fake ID for destruction. 

Well-being check

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies were called to East Scatter Ridge Road in Athens for a well-being check Wednesday. The caller stated her daughter was staying at this residence and she couldn’t get ahold of her. 

The mother stated a man had answered her daughter’s phone and informed her that her daughter was sleeping. 

Deputies attempted to make contact at the residence, while on scene the mother received a call from the daughter informing her that she was fine. Units returned to patrol. 

Open 911 line

Deputies were called to Glazier Road in Guysville for a report of an open 911 line Wednesday. Athens County Sheriff’s deputies made contact with a man and woman who informed them that everything was fine. 

The woman informed them she had someone on their way to pick her up. Deputies resumed patrol.

Thursday, Nov. 21

More gunshots?

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies patrolled Oakdale Road in Glouster after receiving a report of gunshots being heard in the area Thursday.

Nothing was heard by the deputies once upon arrival. 

Quick nap

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to United Lane in Athens regarding a man asleep in his vehicle but was unable to wake up Thursday.

Once arriving, deputies were able to make contact with the individual who informed them that he was tired and pulled over. After speaking to the individual, deputies returned to patrol.
