Wrestling: Results from the 2024 Navy Classic

Ohio (1-1) traveled Saturday to Annapolis, Maryland for the Navy Classic. The Bobcats placed eighth out of 12 teams with a slew of impressive performances all around.

Here is all you need to know from the weekend.

125-pound class:

To start things off in the 125-pound weight class, sophomore Ryan Meek lost his match in the championship bracket versus Kent State’s Nick Calello after a bye in the round of 32.

Meek won his first match in the consolation bracket in a close 6-4 decision before falling in the final round to Citadel’s Malik Hardy.

Redshirt sophomore Malachi O’Leary also lost his match in the championship bracket to Citadel’s Malik Hardy and a tight race in the consolation bracket 5-4 against Lehigh’s Ethan Smith.

141-pound class:

Ohio continued its slow start in the 141-pound weight class.

Redshirt sophomore Paul Woo lost his first-round match by a staggering 20-3 decision versus eventual class champion Brock Hardy from Nebraska.

In the consolation bracket, Woo lost his second-round match to Oregon State’s DJ Gillett. Redshirt sophomore Pierce Taylor also lost his first-round match in the championship bracket to Oregon State’s Nash Singleton.

149-pound class:

Ohio’s Logan Cravatas turned things around for Ohio, giving it its first win of the tournament and a fairly successful push through the championship bracket.

After winning his first-round matchup in an 11-4 decision, Cravats went on to beat Kent State’s Nathan Roth before eventually falling to Oregon State’s McKinley Robbins in the quarter-finals.

Cravats competed in only one match in the consolation bracket, where he fell to Bucknell’s Aiden Davis.

157-pound class:

Ohio’s Dan Segura competed in the 157-pound weight class and lost his first-round matchup to Navy’s Jonathon Ley. He made a push in the consolation bracket, making it to the semifinals before falling to Citadel's Tyler Badgett.

174-pound class:

Ohio’s Garrett Thompson finished third in the 174-pound weight class, delivering a better result than the wrestlers before him.

Thompson defeated Indiana’s Nick South in the second round and Citadel’s Ben Haubert in the quarterfinals before falling to Navy’s Danny Wask in the semifinals.

In the match for third place, Thompson narrowly defeated Bucknell’s Myles Takats in a 4-1 decision.

285-pound class:

Wyatt Schmitt competed in the 285-pound weight class for the Bobcats, the final class of the day.

Schmitt lost his first matchup in the championship bracket against Oregon State’s Charley Hastritar. In the consolation bracket, Schmitt won his first matchup against Cleveland State’s Mekhi Bradley before falling in the next round to American’s William Jarrell.
