An initiative proposing that Nelsonville abolish its city charter is on today's general election ballot but was left off of Nelsonville paper ballots.
If Issue 23 passes, the Nelsonville City Charter, which became effective Jan. 1, 1995, will be abolished and returned to a statutory form of government.
According to an Athens County Board of Election press release, the Board of Elections became aware of a localized ballot error impacting all precincts in the City of Nelsonville this morning.
The vendor misprinted the paper ballots and did not include Issue 23, according to the Board of Elections.
The Board of Elections corrected the issue using electronic voting machines, which were unaffected.
However, approximately 90 voters had already voted by paper ballot. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Nelsonville City has a population of less than 5,000 people. The Board of Elections is contacting affected voters by phone to tell them they may return to vote on Issue 23.
