Actor Spotlight: John Krasinski named People’s 2024 ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

John Krasinski shares similarities with fellow celebrities Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds and Mel Gibson — career paths, hair color and height. Their newest similarity is receiving the honorary title “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine

Krasinski's 2024 win, the newest addition to the group, has shocked some people. To others, it was a long time coming for "The Office“ and "A Quiet Place" actor. Krasinski was up against notable stars, including "Twisters“ Glen Powell, "Bridgerton" star Jonathan Bailey and producer and songwriter Benny Blanco.

“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” made the announcement Nov. 12 with Krasinski present, where Colbert showed off the two different covers People Magazine produced for its 2024 “Sexiest Man Alive” edition.

“I thought it was a prank when they told me, but now I am sure of it,” Krasinski said when asked how long he knew about the award. After this, he stated he had only told Matt Damon about his win after leaving the photoshoot with People.

This year's People's Sexiest featured many new categories and winners besides Krasinski, including Sexiest Handyman, which went to HGTV star Chip Gaines. "Shameless" star Jeremy Allen White won for Sexiest Tattoos, and Sexiest TikTok Star went to Mark Estes of the Montana Boyz.

Hailing from Newton, Massachusetts, Krasinski stuck close to home now living in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and actress Emily Blunt and their two children. He said he was excited to tell them the news and appreciated his life with them.

“It’s that beautiful thing where when you’re married to someone, you’re constantly learning and changing and evoling,” Krasinski told People

Krasinski, who graduated from Brown University in 2001 after studying English and playwriting, becomes People’s 36th person to win the award after last year’s winner, Patrick Dempsey. While his acting career is less extensive than Dempsey's, Krasinski has had several notable performances and accolades in his resume.

He first interned as a scriptwriter on the show “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” after graduating before he moved to New York, where he spent time doing numerous odd jobs and roles while working as a waiter. Krasinski began acting in the early 2000s with his first listed role as a Judge’s assistant in David Mamet’s “State and Main.” While it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H. Macy, Krasinski was not credited in the film.

In 2005, Krasinski had his breakout and most memorable role as Jim Halpert in “The Office,” where he starred alongside Jenna Fischer and Steve Carell. In addition to being a main character on the show from 2005 to 2013, Krasinski continued to build his portfolio by being the voice of Lancelot in the 2007 “Shrek the Third,” playing himself in the 2011 “The Muppets” and directing and starring in the 2016 film “The Hollars.”

His most recent success has come from his roles as Lee Abbott in 2018’s "A Quiet Place" and its sequel. He also directed both films, which grossed a combined $348,096,622 at the box office, and also starred as Jack Ryan in "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan."

Krasinski's acting, screenwriting and directing are not slowing down soon. He just debuted his latest film, “IF,” in which he wrote, directed and voiced the main character, "Dad." The film has grossed $190,309,707 worldwide since its premiere May 8, 2024.

In his Late Night Show interview, Colbert said Krasinski had a good reason to stay in the sexiest man shape before Krasinski agreed and announced he would begin working on a new Jack Ryan movie. The Jack Ryan franchise has had a variety of actors, including Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Chris Pine and Ben Affleck, who play the main character, and Krasinski will soon.

Considering the upcoming holidays, Krasinski joked that Thanksgiving will be great with his new title and looks forward to hosting it with his wife.

"Emily is an incredible cook, and she does mostly everything for it, but I got the turkey," Krasinski told Colbert.

With his well-rounded background in acting, screenwriting and directing, Krasinski has become widely popular since his start in the 2000s. As a family-oriented man still growing his career, his title as People's 2024 Sexiest Man Alive is supported, and he earns his spot as one of the 36 sexiest men alive.
