Women’s Golf: Ohio secures first place finish in Rocket Classic Invitational

Ohio traveled to Port Clinton, Ohio, for Toledo’s two-day Rocket Classic Invitational this weekend, finishing first. The Bobcats were coming off a great tournament as a team placing second in Ball State’s Brittany Kelly Classic where the team shot an 889 (+25). 

The Bobcats came into the Rocket Classic Invitational hungry for a win after coming so close to their first last week. The team finished the early round Monday with a combined score of 309 (+21) good for a fourth-place tie. 

The Bobcats turned it on in the second round, dropping their score by seven strokes to 302 (+14) led by junior Mackenzie McRee’s 72 (even par) allowing the team to move up to 2nd ending Monday’s match play. 

Coming into Tuesday Ohio trailed Akron by six strokes in order to win the tournament. The Bobcats ended up dropping seven more strokes and winning but posting the best score out of all the teams with an impressive 295 (+7) to end the tournament and bring home the Rocket Classic Invitational trophy. 

The Bobcats finished the final round with four of their five qualifying players holding a two-over-par or better. All five qualifying golfers for Ohio finished their finals rounds with their best scores. McRee finished with a 73 (+1) earning the highest rank of the tournament with a combined 221 (+5) following her was sophomore Zoe Luebers who’s consistent rounds put her in seventh with a 225 (+9) and a final round of 74 (+2).  

The rest of the Bobcats rankings consisted of a tie at 18th for sophomore Morgan Rodgers and junior Sydney Longstreth with scores of 230 (+14). Both finished with an impressive 74. Rounding out the group was sophomore Anna Coccia who finished 36th with a 239 (+23). 

The first-place finish marks Ohio’s first since the Delores Black Falcon Invitational in April 2017. The Bobcats will travel to Portage, Michigan, for Western Michigan’s Bronco Fall Classic next Monday and Tuesday. The Bobcats will look to win back-to-back tournaments.
