All smiles for OU field hockey as they win against Davidson on Sept. 4, 2022.

Field Hockey: Ohio suffers 4-1 loss against Brown

Ohio (3-5) lost to Brown (2-3) by a score of 4-1. Ohio's offense played at a very stagnant pace and rarely ever dominated possession of the ball, as Brown dominated Ohio's goal.

Brown had 24 shots with 19 being on goal and 13 penalty corners. Ohio's defense showed signs, however, saving 15 shot attempts. Comparatively, Ohio's offense mustered up four shots on the goal and one penalty corner.

The first quarter started to tell the story of the game as Brown started very aggressively on offense, missing a handful of opportunities due to Ohio's defense stepping up to the plate. For most of the first quarter, the defense tried to jumpstart plays for the offense but Ohio was unable to capitalize due to unforced errors.

By the end of the first quarter, Ohio only had two shots to Brown's seven. Brown also had four penalty corners in this quarter. Neither Ohio nor Brown would score, however, and the first quarter would end 0-0.

The second quarter of play saw a lot more action scoring-wise as Brown took a 2-0 lead. After Ohio's defense continued to stop Brown's shots from hitting the back of the goal, forward Lucy Adams put the first point of the game on the board for Brown. The second goal came shortly after, courtesy of Brown forward Lexi Pellegrino.

The second half didn't get better for Ohio, as 27 seconds into the third quarter, Brown scored its third goal of the game. This goal came from midfielder Mia Karine Myklebust off an assist from Zoe Lawrence.

Brown didn't wait to score again, though, as only a few minutes later, it ran the score up to 4-0 with another goal from Pellegrino. Ohio's lone score of the game would come a few minutes after the previous goal, as Ohio back, Anouk Plaehn made the score 4-1, coming off an assist from Emily Risser.

The fourth quarter, while scoreless, saw Brown continue to launch shots at Ohio's goal. Brown was able to put up six more shots in the fourth quarter, along with four penalty corners; all misses. The ball stayed by Ohio's net, with Ohio recording five saves in the fourth quarter alone. When the buzzer rang out, the game was over with a score of 4-1, giving Brown the victory.

"Our press (needs to improve). It's too easy," Ohio coach Ali Johnstone said. "... It was just too easy for (Brown) to get right through us."

Ohio's defense played a very strong game, as Ohio had more saves in each quarter than Brown did the entire game. Coach Johnstone was pleased with how the defense played and how they worked as a team.

"I think the keyword is unit," said Johnstone. "They work really well together. I think their communication every game is getting better."

With Ohio losing both of its home games this weekend, it will play its next game on Sep. 29 on the road against Longwood.
