Episode 3 recap
Episode 3 of Season 20 hits on all of the classic “Grey’s Anatomy” notes. The interns are fighting, Meredith Grey is breaking rules and a new surgical attending is being welcomed to Grey Sloan.
Miranda Bailey’s O.R. ban against the interns is still going strong, and despite the fact this ban is designed to make the interns stronger doctors, so far it has only led to them hating each other. Mika Yusuda is mad at Lucas Adams as he is the reason the interns got banned from the O.R. in the first place. Simone Griffith is also mad at Lucas Adams; he crashed her wedding and then called off their relationship. Mika and Lucas are tasked by Bailey to keep an eye on a patient who was shot and is in bad condition. Mika takes this responsibility seriously but Lucas would rather be anywhere else. The patient ends up coding and Lucas takes the credit for Mika’s save. Lucas ends up leaving the house the interns all share and has seemingly disappeared.
A new surgical attending is introduced in this episode. Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales, is a pediatric attending and her start at Grey Sloan is a little rocky. Monica’s first introduction to the doctors at Grey Sloan happened in the parking lot before she even stepped foot in the hospital when no one other than neuro attending, Amelia Shepherd, steals her parking spot. This rubs Monica the wrong way and makes her late to her first consultation. Of course, Amelia and Monica find themselves working on the same case later on in the day and they continue to butt heads throughout the day.
Before getting on the bad side of the new attending, Amelia is working with Meredith to secure funding for the research Meredith is not even allowed to be doing. Typical Meredith Grey actions here. Amelia and Meredith run into trouble when the group they are presenting wants to meet Catherine Avery. Catherine is, of course, the person Meredith is keeping her research hidden from. Amelia and Meredith are at an impasse and the situation will most likely proceed to get even trickier as the season goes on.
Episode 4 recap
Episode 4 marks the return of beloved fan-favorite doctor, Arizona Robbins. Arizona left the show in Season 14 to focus on fetal surgery and to be closer to her ex-wife, Callie Torres, and their daughter Sofia.
Arizona comes back to Grey Sloan to make history. She is working with Jo Wilson and Amelia to perform an in-utero procedure on a fetus with a rare blood disorder. Arizona believes she can successfully complete this never-done-before procedure despite reserves from her fellow surgeons and her patient. However, Arizona ends up being able to perform the procedure and Miranda Bailey is reminded of the pure magic of surgery.
In other news, Lucas’ location has been revealed. After leaving the intern house, Lucas finds himself crashing at Amelia’s – his aunt – house. His move-in makes Amelia’s life much harder than it was; Lucas is a messy and inconsiderate houseguest and is already causing problems for Amelia.
Speaking of interns, the interns are finally getting the long-awaited interrogation for their actions in the Season 19 finale. The investigators are tough, but after all someone did die under the hands of the interns, specifically Lucas, and consequences loom in the distance.
Episode 5 recap
Episode 5 is a deeply personal episode. Meredith’s son winds up in the hospital and Jo Wilson thinks she is pregnant.
Meredith is in Seattle working with Amelia on her forbidden Alzheimer’s research, while her kids are back home in Boston with her boyfriend Nick. Meredith is texting back and forth with her daughter Zola when she finds out Nick took her son Bailey to the hospital without calling her. Meredith panics, as any mother would, and hops on Catherine Avery’s private jet back to Boston. Richard Webber – who always finds himself at the scene of Meredith’s personal problems – joins her. Bailey is fine after a routine appendectomy, but Meredith is not. She is angry at Nick for not calling her and opens up to Richard about the trauma the death of her husband, Derek Shepherd, left. Shepherd died in Season 11 after being hit by a semi-truck. Meredith is having a hard time seeing a loved one in a hospital bed again and tells Richard she misses Derek the most in the middle of the night. Meredith knows she was unfair to Nick and apologizes for her harshness towards him.
Jo Wilson realizes she missed her period. This sends her and her boyfriend Link into a spiral. The couple each have a child of their own and feel they are not ready for another one. All ends well as Jo finds out she is not pregnant. Despite their initial panic over the situation, Jo and Link realize they do want to have a baby together just not at this moment in time.
“Grey’s Anatomy” will return for Season 20, Episode 6 May 2, 2024.
