Dear Editor,
I am writing to highlight a critical issue affecting our community: food insecurity in the Ohio University community. As a resident deeply invested in the well-being of our community, I am troubled by the persistent and widespread hunger many students, including families, children and other community members face.
Despite being known for its scenic beauty and vibrant cultural scene, OU as a community needs help with alarming rates of food insecurity. Food insecurity has far-reaching consequences that extend beyond hunger alone. It negatively impacts individuals' physical and mental health, academic performance, economic stability and overall quality of life. Furthermore, food insecurity disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including low-income households, people of color, individuals with disabilities and rural residents, exacerbating existing inequalities and disparities.
While there are organizations and initiatives in our community working tirelessly to combat food insecurity, such as Cats’ Cupboard Food Pantry, other food banks, pantries and community meal programs, the demand for food assistance continues to outpace available resources. This requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach that includes policy changes, increased funding for food assistance programs, expanded access to healthy food options and investments in community-based solutions that address the root causes of food insecurity.
I urge the school policymakers, community leaders, businesses and residents to prioritize addressing food insecurity and supporting initiatives that promote food access, equity and justice. By coming together as a community, we can build a more resilient and inclusive OU community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
