Correction appended: An earlier version of this story stated that Garrett Alderman has played in nine out of the last 10 games that have been victories for Ohio. This is incorrect, Alderman has played in 10 games total, nine of which Ohio has won. The story has been updated to reflect this.
Garrett Alderman is having his moment. After playing a critical role in securing the 9-0 shutout against Oswego State last weekend, he defended against Toledo’s 21 shots on goal to secure the series sweep and 6-0 victory for Ohio on Saturday.
The sophomore goaltender has already played in six games this year, an increase from his four total for the entirety of last season. His growth from his freshman year is something that is not lost on Head Coach Lionel Mauron.
“He’s doing a great job. Last year, when he came in as a freshman, he didn’t get a lot of chances to show what he could do. This year, every game he’s played, he’s been really good, so we’re excited for him this year. But we also know that for the future, we have someone who can be goalie number one,” said Mauron.
Alderman had some impressive leadership to look up to last year with Justin Damon and Max Karlenzig; each still plays a role with the team, but watching them last year allowed Alderman to truly be able to hone his craft.
“Being able to watch how those guys played last year and how they do in practice, how they carry themselves. It’s very beneficial to see how they play and their mindsets too. It’s very positive and everyone kind of builds off each other,” said Alderman.
Nine out of 10 games that Alderman has played in have been victories for Ohio, and his shutout on Saturday was his second of the season. He attributes his success to his attitude while he’s in goal.
“I’m relaxed and confident. I go out there and know that I should stop the puck, it’s simple, it’s a game. So I don’t want to go out there and overthink every shot, every pass; just read it as it comes to me,“ Alderman said.
Last night’s victory could not have happened without Alderman, and Mauron believes that he was truly the star of the game. Despite not seeing a lot of action at certain points, Alderman never let his guard down, and his strong mindset has allowed him to continue to be a beacon of victory in the games he’s playing in. He was not just a star for Ohio on the ice against Toledo either, his presence off the ice is something that everyone enjoys just as much.
“He is really a guy in the room that everyone loves,” Mauron said. “He’s really funny and he always has a positive energy. Now that he is getting more playing time, his personality shows when he’s feeling great.”
