Ohio University received a call that required students on the basement floor of Copeland Hall to evacuate Tuesday afternoon.
Toilets on the bottom floor of Copeland Hall were backed up due to sanitary wipes causing them to overflow.
“We got a call that toilets were backed up out on the floor, which is why they evacuated the building,” Owen Hawk, a university plumber, said.
Hawk mentioned that when students flush sanitary wipes, they don’t break down, causing the toilets to get caught in the drain.
Students were being relocated to the Copeland Annex to use the bathroom.
Alexis Justice, a sophomore studying marketing, left her class to use the bathroom. She expressed her annoyance with having to walk upstairs to the annex to use the restroom.
“I don’t feel good about it,” Justice said.
Classes are still in session in the hall, including the classrooms on the basement floor where the incident happened.
