Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were a couple people aspired to be like, but all of a sudden as September began, speculation of the power couple’s divorce started to circulate. Then, on Sep. 3, TMZ posted an article confirming the couple’s split. Almost instantly, the question began circulating: What led to the couple’s divorce?
Jonas and Turner’s relationship began toward the end of 2016. The two were seen in public together quite a bit, and people were definitely noticing. The Instagram posts together began, but the pair did not confirm, or deny, the budding relationship. In July 2017, suppositions were finally confirmed when Turner and Joe arrived together at Comic-Con in San Diego. According to Entertainment Tonight, Turner jokingly said Jonas was a "good accessory." The two seemed to be hitting it off, and later that year something exciting happened.
Oct. 15, 2017, Jonas and Turner announced their engagement on Instagram. The world was not surprised they had gotten engaged after a year together. Then, about a year and a half later, the two had an impromptu wedding, but it was not all a fairytale. Turner admitted they broke up for 24 hours before getting married.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Turner said, “It was the worst day of our lives. For a second we both had cold feet, then 24 hours later we were both, like, ‘Never mind.’” Later in July 2019, the two gathered their families and went to France to get married again.
The couple kept their relationship extremely private, so when people learned Turner was pregnant with her first child eight months into her pregnancy, people weren’t shocked there was never a huge announcement. A month later, in July 2020, Jonas and Turner announced the birth of their baby. Once the baby was born, Turner was more comfortable posting pictures of her baby bump that showed the progression of her pregnancy.
The couple announced their next baby at the 2022 MET Gala when Jonas and Turner walked the red carpet together. Turner wore a dress that showed off her baby bump, and the next day they made the announcement official. Just two months later, in July once again, the couple had another baby girl. After that, they continued to keep their relationship pretty private because it was very important to them.
In an interview with Mr. Porter in 2022, Jonas said, “I want to feel like an open book. But when we started dating, I realized that I didn't have a ton of stuff that was just for me. And in the end, it makes me a better person to have something for myself.”
Over the next few months and into 2023, the couple seemed to be doing well. They attended many events together and were seen together on multiple red carpets and special events. Turner was often seen at Jonas Brothers’ concerts as well. But the couple was not perfectly happy together behind the scenes.
According to a source who spoke to People, the pair had been living apart for the last few months. The kids spent most of their time in Miami with Jonas. In the divorce documents, Jonas talks about how the children have been with him all over the U.S.
Many are upset with Jonas for a statement that was put out attributing their divorce on account of Turner’s partying problem. “She likes to party, he likes to stay at home,” a source told TMZ. Some are responding to the comment, arguing it’s like the world is expected to see Jonas as a “martyr” just for being a dad. The two had a prenuptial agreement stating what they would get in a divorce. Jonas will keep the rights to any music he made, and Turner will keep any royalties from “Game of Thrones.”
One thing is clear: the two don’t seem to be getting back together any time soon. From what’s being stated in the media, the divorce was a long time coming.
“There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” the two wrote in an Instagram post announcing the divorce.
As of right now, specific reasons for the separation are pretty vague. It will be very interesting to see what else comes out, if anything, about this shocking and sudden split.
