A few weeks ago, the Television Academy announced Emmy Award nominations, sparking a lot of debate over which shows would bring home the most wins. While the ceremony is now postponed because of the current Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it doesn’t mean you can’t dive into an Emmy-nominated series this fall.
If you’re in need of a new show to watch or are a TV junkie, here are five Emmy-nominated series to watch this fall:
‘The Bear’ - FX, Hulu
Starring actors such as Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, “The Bear” is the perfect show to watch this fall if you love two things: food and drama. Set in Chicago, the show details the inner workings of a failing restaurant after the death of its owner, which is where White’s character comes into play. The owner being his older brother, White strives to avenge his brother by taking over the restaurant and hiring new staff while also holding onto a few of its original members. Although the show is at times light-hearted and comical because of Edebiri and Moss-Bachrach, it also has a dramatic depth to it that proves how trauma can affect everyone differently, especially those with careers they depend on for their survival.
You can watch the first two seasons of “The Bear” on Hulu.
‘Succession’ - Max
After recently ending its fourth and final season on Max, “Succession” has racked in various Emmy nominations, including “Drama Series” and “Lead Actor in a Drama Series.” While on the outside this show looks like a mockumentary on the upper class, it actually contains extremely dark content, so take that as a warning when starting this series. Following the inner workings of international media conglomerate Waystar Royco and the family behind it, people can easily fall in love with this show for its constant backstabs and camera work similar to shows such as “The Office.” With amazing performances from Sarah Shook to Jeremy Strong, if you’re looking for a more serious show, “Succession” is the one to watch before awards season.
You can watch all four seasons of “Succession” on Max.
‘Abbott Elementary’ - ABC, Hulu
If you haven’t seen “Abbott Elementary” yet, you simply need to. Unlike the previous two series mentioned, this one is the comedic relief everyone needs this fall. Also a mockumentary, this series follows teacher Janine Teagues, played by Quinta Brunson, at Abbott Elementary in Philadelphia, as well as the lives of her fellow co-workers. A more progressive and inclusive comedy series, "Abbott Elementary” will have you laughing out loud but also tearing up with the show’s use of certain themes. With other stars such as Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James, there’s a character for everyone to love while watching. Now with two seasons under its belt, “Abbott Elementary” is definitely sticking around for a while, so why not start watching it?

‘Daisy Jones & the Six’ - Prime Video
Music fans will automatically like “Daisy Jones & the Six,” as it follows a rising folk-rock band in the 1970s. Potentially a nod to Fleetwood Mac, the series is based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid and stars Riley Keough and Sam Claflin. From the start, the series is set up as a documentary, with each member of Daisy Jones & the Six reminiscing on their glory days. With the use of flashbacks, this series proves how fame and addiction can be hindering, as well as catastrophic. Beyond the acting, the musical performances are even more impressive, especially as Keough belts and twirls around on stage for thousands of fans. With love triangles, betrayals and revelations, this show keeps you engaged the whole time, always keeping you on edge.
You can watch the limited series on Prime Video.
‘The Last of Us’ - Max
Based on the beloved video game, “The Last of Us” lands viewers 20 years after a fungal outbreak takes over Earth, with survivors Joel and Tess left to fight for their lives. Played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the two navigate a post-apocalyptic world, also tasked with a mission to potentially save it. With much gore and violence, this series is ideal to watch if you enjoy horror or suspense. Yet, there are also many themes within this show that mirror reality, and the raw emotion felt in certain scenes is what makes this show one to watch during fall, especially with Halloween on the horizon. Recently renewed for a second season, this series is definitely an easy one to knock out before the strikes end.
