After seven years, Trevor Noah, the host of "The Daily Show,“ has decided to step down as anchor.
Whether he was anchoring during the Trump presidency or hosting the show from his own apartment during the pandemic, Noah has always found ways to entertain his viewers with clever comments about the government and social issues worldwide.
"I've loved hosting this show, it's been one of my greatest challenges and one of my greatest joys," Noah said. "I've loved trying to find a way to make people laugh, even when the stories are particularly s***y, even on the worst days. We've laughed together, we've cried together."
According to Vanity Fair, Noah originally replaced host Jon Stewart and signed a five-year contract with Comedy Central in 2017. With his contract ending, Noah decided he missed traveling the world and felt like it was his time to leave.
"I miss learning other languages," Noah said. "I miss going to other countries and putting on shows. I miss just being everywhere, doing everything."
There were rumors of Noah leaving the show to be with his alleged romantic partner, Dua Lipa. According to Billboard, however, Dua Lipa confirmed her relationship status, saying she was very much still single and that she and Noah were not together.
Noah hinted at wanting to go back to stand-up by saying there are other parts of his life he wanted to explore more deeply.
Being the host of "The Daily Show" opened up many opportunities for Noah, such as hosting the Grammys and the White House's Correspondent's Dinner.
Comedy Central issued a statement explaining how sad it was to hear about Noah leaving and that it wished him the best for the future.
It said that although it wasn’t sure exactly when the departure would happen or who the next successor would be, it was working on plans for the show's future.
"We are grateful to Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years," said the network. "With no timetable for his departure, we're working together on next steps. As we look ahead, we're excited for the next chapter in the 25+ year history of The Daily Show as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them."
Andrew Pagan, a freshman studying Biology, said he was enthusiastic about the things Noah would do after leaving the show.
"I'm excited that he's leaving 'The Daily Show' because that means he's going to be doing more stand-up comedy, and I think he's really funny," he said.
Brennan Fisher, a sophomore studying finance and business analytics, said he was not particularly sad to see Noah go.
"He would always make jokes but they were always really dry and I would never laugh at them," he said.
On the other hand, Lucy Lutman, a sophomore studying biology, said she was disappointed to see Trevor Noah leave but was excited to see his future endeavors.
"It's definitely sad to see him leave because he's been on it for so long and he seems like a great guy but, you know, live life and do what you want," she said.
