Admittedly, I have only just gotten back into baseball this current season. Even more embarrassing to admit however, is that I am a Pirates fan. Pay attention to that line. I am a Pirates fan, but not a proud Pirates fan. Bob Nutting is one of the top five worst sports owners in America, but I digress. Unfortunately, the baseball played in October is the postseason, and the Pirates have not made so little as a wild card berth since 2015. I miss the days of competitive baseball in Pittsburgh, but since I can’t talk about that, I will go on a rant instead.
The New York Yankees are bad for baseball and bad for America. Remember, this is an opinion column so feel free to not read, as I am only a guy. But this guy is a two time little league baseball champion, so I am ridiculously credible.
I will start with why the Yankees are bad for baseball. They have had one of, if not the highest, payrolls in the MLB for the last few eons. So knowing this, they’ve logically been super successful in the last decade, right? Wrong! They have not won a World Series since 2009. One of the main things that annoys me is that they have been hogging talent from the rest of the league only for a disappointing end to the season year after year. If not for the Yankees, the balance of talent in the MLB would be much better.
Reason two on why the Yankees are bad for baseball is quite clear: they are dirty stinkin’ cheaters! “Weston, you’ve got it wrong. The Astros were the ones who cheated while beating the Yankees in the playoffs!” Incorrect! Yes, the Astros are also dirty stinkin’ cheaters, but the Yankees can’t claim innocence. If you ask me, it’s a big old bowl of karma. Don’t believe me? According to Sports Illustrated, the Yankees were fined $100,000 for sign stealing, using the replay system to read signs and then phone them into the dugout in 2015. Not cool and bad for baseball.
My final reason that the Yankees are bad for baseball is that they’re simply bad for America. “Yankee” is one of the oldest nicknames, dating back to the days when we were sweeping Queen Lizzy’s England in wars in the 1700s. How dare they use this name in vain. Baseball is supposed to be America’s favorite pastime but they cheat and take the best players from all of the teams that are just trying to get along. This is not the American dream. It is an abuse of the free market and they should be held accountable.
In summary, I would like to say that I am mostly joking. Mostly. The more I think about it, though, the more I am convinced. For any Yankees fans doing the decent thing and abandoning ship, there is another underperforming team in New York that you can switch to by the name of the Mets. They are like the Yankees but not evil. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the rest of the MLB postseason and please stay tuned for more Twin Takes.
